About Name the Countries

Name the Countries is a free project built to make learning world geography genuinely fun — through fast games, friendly competition and clear, accurate guides.

What it is

The site is a collection of browser-based geography games covering every sovereign country on Earth. You can name countries on an interactive world map, match capitals and flags, recognise countries by their outlines, and challenge friends to a shared Daily Challenge. Everything runs in your browser, on phone or desktop, with no download required.

Why we built it

Most people learn the world map once, at school, and then slowly forget it. We wanted something you would actually come back to — short enough to play in a spare minute, competitive enough to keep a streak going, and backed by reference material so that every game is also a chance to learn something. The continent guides in this section exist so that when a country stumps you in a round, you can look it up and remember it next time.

How it works

The games are built on an interactive world map and an open dataset of countries, capitals, flags and borders. Country outlines are drawn from public geographic data, flags follow the ISO country-code standard, and the facts in our guides focus on the things that don't change month to month — countries, capitals, regions and physical geography. We deliberately avoid volatile figures so the material stays accurate.

A learning project, not an encyclopaedia

We are not trying to replace a full atlas or encyclopaedia. The aim is narrower and more practical: to help you build a confident mental map of the world and have fun doing it. If you spot an error in a guide, we want to fix it — accuracy matters to us.
